Make your Website 50% Faster

Google announced yesterday that they’ve released a new module for Apache (web server software) which will increase the page load time by up to 50%.  This is awesome news because I’ve been struggling to maintain SA Business Directory for quite some time now.  It’s just a lot more popular than I thought it would be and Drupal isn’t behaving as nicely as I would like it to.

What this module does it take fixes (or filters) that people implement on their sites to increase speed and then apply them to all your pages automatically on the fly.  This means you don’t need to physically go and edit your CMS or your pages.

Google also releases varies install files for the different Linux distributions out there, so it’s very easy to setup.  It literally took me about 15 seconds to get my Apache2 to load the new mod_pagespeed module.

My only concern is how much processing power it will take to apply these filters to each page before it is sent to a client.  I’ll be monitoring the resources over the next couple of days and compare it to previous records.  It has however increased the speed of the pages very noticeably.

Ubuntu 10.04 to be code named Lucid Lynx

At the most recent Ubucon it was announced, by Mark Shuttleworth himself, that the next major version of Ubuntu will be called Lucid Lynx.

This release carries on using the unique naming conventions the creators of Ubuntu make use of.

It has been explained the reason Lucid Lynx has been used is because the word lucid means to be clear and the lynx is a thoughtful predator. Both which are very good definition of what Ubuntu has become.

Here is a video clip from Youtube with Mark making the announcement.

Hannah Montana Linux

Seriously, wtf?  You might think I’m joking, and if I were you I’d also think I was joking, but I’m not.

After searching for quite a bit, I’m starting to get more and more information about it.

For one thing, it was hosted on http://hannahmontana.sourceforge.net/ for a few days before it was taken down.  Probably due to trademark issues.

I have been able to find a few torrents that are still offering it as a download.

The verdict is that it’s true, there is a Hannah Montana Linux out there.  It’s basically Kubuntu with a customized theme installed.  Apparently the advertising of it started on Twitter and just spread like wild fire.  The power of the Internet hey?
