Happy Birthday to Us!

Today, exactly 1 year ago, Barto, Bernadette and I started the discussions that would eventually give birth to EC Offroad Adventures.  We were all clear that we didn’t want to make money off this, but we wanted to do it to promote the 4×4 industry in the Eastern Cape.  Although we run it as a business, it really is just a formal structure to take our passion to the people.

Our main purpose is to organise 4×4 trails that people can join us on and setup various events like GPS challenges and other fun competitions.  For now we are concentrating on the Eastern Cape, but soon we will be organising trips to the rest of South Africa as well as other African countries.

The three of us have very similar and very different personalities and ideas, but it’s all those differences that has made EC Offroad Adventures work thus far.  We’ve had to go through a lot of shit from outside influences, but we have been able to overcome all those obstacles and keep steaming ahead!

May EC Offroad Adventures keep on rocking!

Your business needs competition

It recently seems that we’ve got people jealous of our success with new businesses we start up.  And they take it to the next level by looking for ways to try and through stones into our roads to success.  The industry we’re trying to get into is quite small in our province, and I think one of the reason it’s small is that there aren’t enough competitors in this field.

But it’s a double edged sword.  There might not be enough competitors because there isn’t a market for it here.  I don’t believe that is the case though.  I just think the poor people that have previously tried to break into the market got so swept up in all the stones being pushed in their path that they decided to just quit.  Well, we’re not going to quit.

We’re passionate about what we’re doing, and we just love doing what we’re doing.  That is one of the main reasons we are so successful, people can see we just love it!

This whole situation has made me think about businesses again, and how stupid some South Africans can be.  We are the world’s best entrepreneurs, but yet we want everything for ourselves.  In our IT business I’m not jealous or treat other IT businesses like competition.  In fact, I’m friends with a lot of them.  Sure we don’t share client lists and thing like that, but we are civilized towards each other and don’t try and make life difficult for one another.  Not all of them are like that, I’m just saying that a small group of us are.

I believe every business and industry needs competition.  But not competition in the sense of trying to burn down your competitor’s offices, or trying to find ways to give them up for making mistakes.  No, I mean healthy competition.  Someone that you look up to and think, “Hey, perhaps I should’ve tried that first!”, whenever they come up with a good idea.  This inspires you to do better.

Look at Telkom.  For years they’ve had no competition in this country, and what has happened?  We have fallen back in terms of technology that is available elsewhere in the world, but lacking here.  We ran at Internet speeds about a 100th of the speeds other countries are getting.  Would this have happened if Telkom had 3-5 competitors for the last 20 years?   I doubt it.

I think when clients feel they have the freedom to chose from various companies, they feel better about their purchase, and might even buy more regularly.  That’s my opinion anyways.

So if you’re one of those people that look at your competitors with hate in your eyes, stop it, you might just kill off your industry if you get your wish.

First 4×4 Night Event in the Eastern Cape a huge success

When we started EC Offroad Adventures one of the first events we just knew we were going to do was an all night 4×4 event.  This is something that would put people out of their comfort zone, and see how well they perform under pressure and when they’re tired.

To be honest, while we were doing the planning, we didn’t yet know what the response would be like.  It was a struggle to get people to go on 4×4 trips last year when I organised it for the Algoa Toyota 4×4 Club, but we were pleasantly surprised.  11 vehicles with 31 people attended!

The whole trip report can be read here: http://www.ec-offroad.co.za/trip-reports/baviaanskloof-night-event-2009

We enjoyed setting it up, getting to know more people, seeing everyone enjoy themselves and just running the whole event.  I’m not sure who had more fun, us or the participants!

Kicking myself in the pants

If ever there was a time to kick myself square in the pants, today is it. I’ve been working on a biggish project, and have gotten to the 95% mark when I hit the wrong button and deleted the whole directory with all the files in it!

And the last time I made backups (or when our backup server was actually still on) was about 6 months ago. Terrible TERRIBLE feeling. Strange how I always insist that our clients understand the value of backups, but I let my guard down with it comes to my own stuff.

Part of our service offering to clients is data recovery. As I’m running Linux with Ext3 Filesystem it is a bit more difficult than normal and a lot more labor intensive.

I am now waiting to see if it’s going to work. It will probably take another 2-3 hours before I know if I’ve lost the whole week’s worth of work. It’s not only the time I need to get it working again, but it’s to remember how exactly I did it!

Damnit, damnit, damnit!
